Green Roots Apothecare: A Short Lived Hope For Crabtree

When the Crabtree Tavern closed its doors for the last time in 2013, the future of the then 99 year old building was uncertain. The building remained vacant for 7 years until August of 2020, when work began on partially renovating the building for use by Green Roots Apothecare, a business founded in 2019 by Christa Barnhart. They began manufacturing salves, tinctures, and bath bombs in the former tavern in October of 2020.

The first of 9 craft fairs was held on October 9th, 2021. The next was held on October 10th. The other 7 were held on: November 13th, November 14th, December 4th, December 5th, December 11th, December 18th, and the final craft fair held in the building was on February 12th, 2022. The events featured many vendors selling products like soap, rocks, and necklaces among many other things. A food truck, 3 potato more, came at least once, and there was quite a fair turnout to all of the events held. I, among the many in attendance at the February event was unaware that it was to be the last time that I would set foot in the building while it was being used by Green Roots Apothecare. Two months went by with no word from the official Green Roots page before I asked Christa Barnhart whether there would be a craft fair in April. I was informed that operations had ceased in the building due to "To [sic] many problems with the building and no heat."

And so returns the uncertainty for the future of the now 108 year old building. While there are still tenants living in apartments in the back of the building, there is no longer a business there.
